The chat UI for Orion, TRM's AI investigation assistant
I built the chat interface for Co-Case Agent, now Orion, launched in March 2026, and shaped how investigators interact with the graph through it.

Context
Co-Case Agent, now Orion, is TRM’s AI investigation assistant. Investigators ask questions in plain language and the assistant answers with evidence from the investigation, including the graph. I built the chat interface it shipped with in March 2026.
What I built
- A streaming, virtualized transcript. Answers stream in token by token, and long sessions stay fast because only what is on screen is rendered.
- Collapsible chain-of-thought. Investigators can see how an answer was reached without the reasoning crowding the conversation.
- Answers linked to the graph. Chips in an answer jump to the matching node on the investigation graph, so the conversation and the evidence stay connected.
- A detachable pop-out window, so the assistant can sit beside the graph instead of covering it.
Product decisions
While working on advanced graph selection, I built several working prototypes with AI agents and tested them with TRM’s internal investigators before committing to a design. Feedback was mixed, so the plan became combining the strongest parts of each.
I also proposed routing selection prompts through the Orion chat investigators already use, instead of adding a second AI agent. That proposal was approved for the first version: one place to talk to the product, not two.
Impact
- Orion’s chat UI launched in March 2026.
- The single-assistant direction kept the product simpler for investigators and the codebase simpler for the team.
